The best Thai hotels are excellent
and can be judged by the most exacting international standards. Their
prices, however, will come as a pleasant surprise. Hotels in the "average
and above" categories will differ little from those marked as
"expensive". They will perhaps have one or two restaurants
instead of four, and a more limited range of sports facilities.
Accommodation in the "moderate" bracket ranges from
comfortable, western-style hotels in areas where international tourism
has yet to make an impact to the simpler ones, which may not have air-conditioning
or hot water. Places in the "inexpensive" category can be
anything from an idyllic wooden chalet situated literally on the beach in Koh Samui to a plain commercial traveler's hotel upcountry in
Mae Hong Son or Chiang Saen.
